Uh oh, looks like someones been watching Netflix documentaries till 2 am....

Yes. I've been feeling guilty for all the processed foods I've been eating. I've been learning about superfoods and utilizing my blender for all it's worth. My objective is to pump myself full these magical superfoods as much as possible.

What are superfoods? Foods that are totally jam packed full of vitamins and minerals, more so than regular food. They're also foods with benefits beyond their nutritional content. Pretty much, magic food.

1.// Kale - Hands down this should be on the top of everyone's superfood list! It's off the charts when it comes to nutrients. Packed with vitamin A and C, calcium, and cancer fighting phytonutrients. It's also super full of fiber.

2.// Tomato - A cancer fighting superfood! Not only do they contain lycopene (the phytonutrient that helps prevent heart disease), but they're full of vitamin A, C, and E.

3.// Orange - At only 60 calories, and very sweet, it's more of a dessert. Oranges are full of the most readily available vitamin C that we can get in most foods. Vitamin C helps heal wounds, repairs tissue, and helps build skin. Oh, and it's full of 170 cancer fighting phytochemicals and 60 flavonoids. It also helps reduce inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis.

4.// Broccoli - Only 30 calories in one cup and so fibrous and filling! It boosts the immune system, supports cardiovascular health, builds bones, and fights birth defects. And super good for colon cleanses. Yes, I said colon cleanse.

5.// Salmon- Rich in Omega 3s (EPA and DHA) at only 2 servings per week! So beneficial for heart health. High in monounsaturated fat which in turn will lower your cholesterol. There are studies saying Salmon can help with depression as well.

6.// Pumpkin - Extremely high in fiber and low in calories. Full of potassium, pantothentic acid, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. Pumpkin contains one of the richest supplies of bioavailable carotenoids known to man. Oh, and women found with high amounts of carotenoids were the ones with the lowest risk for breast cancer.

7.// Apple - An apple a day right? Full of antioxidants, fiber, and potassium- the apple skin alone provides 2-6 times more antioxidants than the flesh! One large apple has 5.7 grams of fiber, which is 30 percent of the minimum recommended amount. Everyone knows it's link with heart health, but apples also play an important role in the prevention of type II diabetes.

8.// Blueberry - Insanely packed full of phytonutrients which help the body cells communicate with each other more efficiently. Blueberries are so rich with this stuff that even though they're low in vitamin C, they still provide as much antioxidant protection as 1200 milligrams of vitamin C.

9.// Almond/Almond butter - The most diet friendly of all the nuts. High in protein, heart friendly, and very filling. They are high in fat, but healthy fat - or monounsaturated fat. They're also high in magnesium and vitamin E, which improves blood flow and calms arteries - aka heart happy. (Keep your intake at around 12 almonds a day - 100 calories/10 grams of fat)

10.// Avocado- My absolute favorite! High in healthy oleic acid that helps increase fat metabolism and rich in vitamin E. Avocados are the best anti-aging foods out there. They help prevent wrinkles and skin aging.

11.// Pomegranate- Loaded with nutrition and abundant in vitamin C, potassium, and pantothenic acid. They're also rich in anti-oxidant phytonutrient polyphenols such as tannins and flavonoids. Pomegranates are one of nature's richest sources of free radical scavenging antioxidants.

12.// Legumes - Offer a range of health benefits- full of plant protein, have the lowest GI of any group, contain soluble fiber, rich in antioxidants, provide minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium, and contain no cholesterol and are virtually free of saturated fat.

Of course there are so many other superfoods out there, but these are my favorites. I'm balancing my Medifast lifestyle with a raw eating lifestyle as much as possible. Some of these superfoods are not typical for a Medifast diet, but I'm making the diet work for me, I still feel successful.
